About MK-677
MK-677, also called ibutamoren, is an orally active small molecule that mimics ghrelin signaling; it is not a peptide. Research has evaluated its ability to stimulate growth hormone and IGF-1 in settings including a randomized trial in healthy older adults. Changes in hormone levels or body composition in that trial did not demonstrate improved physical function. Ibutamoren remains investigational and is not an approved drug.
At a glance
- Class
- Non-peptide, orally active small-molecule ghrelin mimetic (ibutamoren).
- Studied mechanism
- Activates the ghrelin growth hormone secretagogue receptor, increasing pulsatile GH secretion and downstream IGF-1 in research settings.
- Evidence context
- A randomized trial in healthy older adults found increased GH secretion and fat-free mass, but did not find improvement in strength or physical function.
Blank arithmetic calculator
For independently verified inputs, concentration equals entered vial amount in mg divided by added liquid in mL. Entered requested mg divided by concentration gives mL; multiplying mL by the actual syringe markings per mL gives units. Enable JavaScript to use the calculator. This math does not establish that a compound is suitable for injection.
Common questions
Is MK-677 a peptide?
No. MK-677, or ibutamoren, is a non-peptide small molecule that mimics ghrelin activity at the growth hormone secretagogue receptor.
What did a randomized study in older adults establish?
It found increased GH secretion and fat-free mass, but not improvement in strength or physical function. Those results from one study do not establish a clinical benefit for other groups or uses.
